Salem Washington Academys Service Learning Program Displayed at the State Capitol Salem students Tyler Budde, Kasey Dean, Rachel Hoffmann, Kamber Jilek and Jillian Lourie, along with Cynthia Hollister, Service Learning Coordinator, attended a "Share Fair", March16th, in the Legislative Well of the New York State Capitol. This event was an opportunity for Salems Service Learning students to highlight and to share with representatives as well as with other school districts the events that take place throughout the school year. The focus of the display included such events as the Courthouse preservation effort, classroom assistants for the summer school program, American Red Cross Blood Drive, Youth Service Opportunity Project, the Salem Area Womens Health Day, Salem Santa Project, Research in Progress and the Salem Area Senior Citizens Banquet.
Senator Betty Little visited Salems display, which gave the students the opportunity to explain each activity as well as to discuss the program with her. While there the students also had the opportunity to tour the capitol, as well as to see first hand the budget negotiation process. This makes the ninth year that Salem Washington Academy has been awarded the competitive Learn and Serve America grant, sponsored by the New York State Education Department.
