The Battenkill Bicycle Race

By, Nick Sobolew

4/21/08

Over the weekend while I was sitting in my room playing guitar, I heard a large rumble coming through my window. This rumble was the sound of over a thousand bicycles racing by my house. The first thing that went through my mind was "wow, that’s a lot of bikes"

I was correct in my assumption; this is the biggest day race in the entire United States. Over 1,000 cyclists showed up for the event, leaving in droves for their respective races the bicyclists completed distances of up to 82 miles.

This race was started to benefit area libraries and the Farm Team Cycling.

Salem's Math Team Places 2nd

Math League Results for 2007-2008

Salem’s math coaches Frank and Frank II Fronhofer are pleased to report that our math team earned 2nd place in the Washington, Warren, Saratoga math league.

Five contests were held and a total of nine schools participated. The first meet was held in South Glens Falls High School, the fifth meet was held in Glens Falls High School.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th meets were held separately at the home schools and the results were shared via e-mail. These meets were held in the evenings late enough so that they wouldn’t conflict with athletic practices or contests.

Salem typically had 25 to 27 students participate at these meets and we had a total of 39 students on the roster.

For each meet an unlimited number of participants are allowed and the team score is comprised of scores from only the top five students. Below are the results of the top teams:

1st place South Glens Falls: 89 points

2nd place Salem: 81 points

3rd place Stillwater: 64 points

4th place Schuylerville: 61 points

5th place Glens Falls: 56 points

Daniel Rosmus, a senior at Salem, was our individual top scorer and he was the top scorer for the entire league. He scored a total of 23 points. The next closest student scored 17 points.

United State's First Blind Governor?

By: Nick Sobolew

3/11/08

If Governor Spitzer steps down from his office, two landmark achievements will be accomplished by one man, the first blind Governor in the United States and the first black Governor in New York State, this man, is David Peterson. Spitzer is under heavy fire from his "Improprieties" during the past week and maybe even his entire career as a politician which may lead to his stepping down from office. David Peterson is 53 years old, in 1985 he was chosen by the voters to represent Harlem in the Senate of New York State, since then he has risen through the ranks gaining Minority Leader and giving ideas about stem cell research and alternative energy and then moving up the ranks some more and ending up today as Lieutenant Governor. Personally, I am looking forward to the day that Spitzer steps down.

Survivor: Micronesia

By: Nick Sobolew

The new survivor series starts tonight (2/7/08)!

It is going to take place in a place called Micronesia and it will feature a few brand spanking new twists, "The Fans Vs. The Favorites".

They have chosen the biggest fans of the series and put them against the favorites from past series such as the man "everyone loves to hate" Jonny Fairplay.

The second twist that has been revealed is the return of Exile Island, except it should be renamed to "Exiles" island because of the fact that they are now sending 2 people to the island to search for the clues and such.

Benefit Dinner for Miles Riley Huge Success

  By: Nick Sobolew

1/28/08

There was a benefit dinner for Miles Riley on Saturday night the 26th of January.

The event took place at the Rupert Firehouse, a great location I might add in retrospect.

The turnout was a great success, upwards of six thousand five hundred dollars were raised. The money is going to be used to help him pay for the some severe medical complications.

After the dinner, a band played for about 2 hours they played such hits as "House of The Rising Sun" by The Animals.

It was a fantastic show for a great cause; this is the kind of things that make me proud to live in Salem.

Salem Central Contributes Ornaments

To D.C. Christmas Tree

 By: David DeMarco

12/7/07

Salem Washington Academy was given the opportunity to supply the National Christmas Tree in Washington D.C. with fifty-one decorated ornaments for the New York tree. The ornaments were decorated by the various classes at the school. Will Moses, local artist and grandson of the famous Grandma Moses, contributed two ornaments of his own artistic genius. Both depict the same scene from the upper-New York State region – one presenting the scene in the day, the other in a more nocturnal nature. Other local artists, including Ruth Sauer and Caroline Hooke, contributed ornaments of their own. Several of which depict symbols relative to New York such as the bluebird, the rose, the garnet, and the beaver.

Recycling Program

By: Shannon Neil

10/31/07

The Salem Student Board is now working on a recycling program for Salem School.

The program will separate newspaper, white paper and colored paper (construction paper doesn’t count).

This project is just in the beginning stages of development. The members are working really hard to get this project up and running as soon as possible.

The deadline for this project to be up and running is by January 1, 2008.

Cheetah Girl Voted off Dancing with the Stars

By Nick Sobolew

10/31/07

The Cheetah Girl Sabrina Bryan was voted off Dancing with the Stars last night. This is a twist no one saw coming among all the other oddities that were popping up through out this season. Apparently the voters didn’t like her or she wouldn’t have stayed.

Mr. McMorris of Salem High School said "She was considered a Professional dancer to a lot of people, and that might have touched all this off." The other one to get voted off with her was Cameron Mathison, who was the most improved and the most likely to take his shirt off.

This all was a huge shock to the Dancing with the stars cast and fans.

APRIL IS RAINING DOWN UPON US!

 By: Kylee Bassett

04/04/07

Boy are we paying for those few nice days we had last week.

This rain is going to be a lot of fun for the next few days so everyone best be ready for it. Hopefully these April showers bring a lot of beautiful May flowers. With any luck our April break is as nice as it usually is but since it is a week earlier this year chances are, it won’t be.

So if you are like one of the unfortunate others that aren’t going anywhere that is 90 degrees and sunny and you can lay on the beach, make the best of your break. Maybe spend a little time working and making a little extra money or helping out around the house. Yes you do need to relax since it is vacation, but make you sure you something good too. Go see a movie with your friends, go for a walk if it’s nice out, or read a good book.

Whatever it is that you are doing, have a good vacation and be safe, we want to see you back after this spring break.

Spring has Sprung!

By: Kylee Bassett

3/14/07

The "winter" that lasted only a few weeks is looking to be over. We were having a mild winter up until a few weeks ago when the snow finally came and it became winter.

We had a few days of cold weather, but they are gone, it is going to be nice today, a high of 60, cooling down for the weekend then warming back up again next week, according to weather.com. All of this warm weather isn’t a completely good thing it may cause flooding in some places. The snow is going to melt extremely fast and the water is not going to be able to be absorbed because the ground is still frozen.

The warm weather is nice, but the effects of the warm weather may turn out to be not so pleasant.

Burglary Trial Ends in Hung Jury

Recently the Business Law Class conducted a mock burglary trial.  The class members acted as lawyers presenting and defending their cases to a jury.  The jury consisted of Mr. Phaneuf, Mrs. Adams, Trooper Schmidt, Mrs. Norman, Mrs. Michel, Mr. Nesbitt, Lauren Barden, Catherine Pugh, Mackenzie Sheldon, Elizabeth Kratzert.

(Pictured above defense attorney Leeanne Geroe grills a witness as Judge McMorris looks on.)

The lawyers for the prosecution were Jesse Bain, Michael Fraioli, and Thomas Stahl.  The lawyers for the defense were Leeanne Geroe, Stephenie Merriman, and Nicholas Sobolew.

The lawyers presented opening statements, called and questioned witnesses, presented evidence and presented closing arguments.

After a "lengthy" deliberation the jury could not come to a unanimous verdict with a "hung jury" so a mistrial was declared.

This is the second mock trial conducted Mr. McMorris' Business Law class.  The first trial was a murder trial that resulted in a "not guilty" verdict.

Salem Welcomes the New Superintendent

By: Biz Kratzert

1/8/07

Mr. Charles Kremer was welcomed into Salem Central School as our superintendent on Tuesday, January 2nd. He was chosen as the favorite of the candidates among the student body, faculty, and Board of Education. Mr. Kremer served as Director for Career and Technical Education at Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES before accepting the position as superintendent. Mr. Kremer also has over 29 years of educational experience, making him well suited for the job. Before moving to administration, he taught for over 17 years in various teaching positions. Our school looks forward to the future with Mr. Kremer.

Where’s The SNOW???

By: Kylee Bassett

01/05/07

What is up with this weather lately? It’s January 5th and the only place there is snow is in the ski resorts where they make it for the ski and snowboarders.

Today it is supposed to be a high of 58 degrees, and the only precipitation in our future is rain. How crazy is that, usually we have 2-3 feet of snow by now, but instead we are walking around in shorts and tank tops.

Saturdays high is going to get up to 61, there is no wonder everyone is sick, this weather is crazy. We might as well start uncovering our pools because it looks like summer might just happen early this year. According to news reports the apple blossoms are beginning to bloom in Washington.

Community Service Opportunities

By: Elizabeth Kratzert

11/30/06

Are you looking to gain more community service hours?

There are many different jobs that can be done.  The Operation Santa Shopping has been completed, but there are many items that need to be wrapped.  This will take place in Mrs. Michel’s room in the next week.

Also, Mrs. Skelly is looking for someone to control the spotlight for the play.  Many elementary teachers are also looking for students to help during study halls or after school.

There are also concession stands to work at and other opportunities outside of school.

If you complete 60 hours of community service, you will receive a half credit, and if you complete 120 hours, you will receive a full credit towards graduation.

In addition, colleges love to see a student who takes part in their community, so the more hours, the better!  There are also a number of scholarships available to students who have a large amount of community service, like the Better Business Bureau Scholarship.

If you have any questions about community service, ask Mrs. Hollister.

Tomato= Fruit

  By: Justin Farrara

10/31/06

Today, there is an ongoing argument over whether a tomato is a fruit, or a vegetable. It is commonly mistaken as a vegetable however, it is a fruit.

This argument was started during a game of scategories, when the letter was "T" and the category was "vegetable". One half of the room said a Tomato was a fruit, and the other half argued that it’s a vegetable.

Look on the internet, it is stated that it is botanically a fruit. That means, that it is scientifically considered a fruit. Some people, after hearing that, still stand firm on their "belief" of it being a vegetable…They’re WRONG ! Just because you eat it in a salad, doesn’t mean that it’s a vegetable.

I’m not sure about you, but I have seen oranges and apples in other salads…not just fruit salads either. I encourage you to ask anyone this question : " Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable ?" And when you’re convinced that it is indeed a fruit, help spread the word !

True Life: Tomato is a Vegetable!

By, Elizalee Bassert

11/3/06

As taken from the Oxford Dictionary, a tomato can be scientifically proven to be a fruit, but it is the fruit of a tomato plant.

Botanists have proven that all edible parts of a plant are indeed vegetables. Therefore, because a tomato is the edible part of the tomato plant, it is a VEGETABLE.

In addition, in order of avoid the tariffs of 1893, the tomato was labeled as a fruit. The Supreme Court then learned of a case that debated whether a tomato was a fruit or a vegetable.

The court ruled that the tomato be classified as a vegetable. Do you eat a tomato in a fruit salad? Can you find the tomatoes in the fruit section? No! Tomatoes are vegetables!

END OF DISCUSSION!

Field Hockey Wins Spirit Week

By: Naomi Losee

10/2/06

Salem Field Hockey won Spirit Week as a group. Field Hockey all dressed up and looked amazing on Tuesday.

On Wednesday the team put on every bit of tie dye that they had.

On Thursday they wore their whole uniform to support team day.

On Friday the Field Hockey team wore football jersey’s to support purple and gold and also to support the football team.

The Field Hockey team was the loudest at the prep rally, cheering for everybody and every team.

Homecoming Was A Success!

By, Biz Kratzert

October 2, 2006

Homecoming was a success once again. Students had fun dancing, thanks to the DJ. The dance started at 7pm, and lasted to 10pm.

Because the football team won their Homecoming Game against Fort Edward, everyone was in good cheer.

The king and queen for each grade are as follows:

Ninth Grade: Dave Northshield and Kora Andrew

Tenth Grade: Katie Tift and Alex Baker

Eleventh Grade: Mackenzie Levey and Price Padgett

Twelfth Grade: Alex Farrara and Lindsay Keys

Thanks for supporting our school!

Looking for A Close To Home Job ?

 By: Justin Farrara

9/29/06

Do you need a job, and don’t want to travel far ? There are several places in Greenwich looking for employees.

K-mart is hiring, Dunkin’ Donuts is always offering jobs, CVS has an online store where you can apply, and if you’re 18, you can even work at the Movie Gallery, Subway, the GHOP, and Hannaford is also looking for employees.

As we all know, there are few places in Salem to work, so having a job that isn’t too far away is very convenient. If you’re 18, you can even work at the mall. But for those of us who aren’t 18, it can be a problem to find a job.

V For Vendetta

 By: Justin Farrara,

9/25/06

V for Vendetta, a relatively new movie, released on August 1st, 2006 catches your interest like no other movie.

Taking place in the future, in London one man is willing to do anything to end England’s extremely controlling government.

As you watch 2 hours of twist after twist, and fight after fight you end the movie thinking, " Wow, that was insane!"

Hat Day!

By: Elizabeth Kratzert

9/25/06

Spirit Week started on Monday, September 25th. The first day was Hat Day. Many students wandered the halls dressed in their best hats. There were cowboy hats, newspaper hats, and even Santa Claus hats. Here is a schedule for Spirit Week:

Tuesday: Dress-Up Day

Wednesday: Tie-Dye Day

Thursday: Sports Day

Friday: Purple & Gold Day

On Friday, there will be an assembly to announce the team who won, as well as the individual winner who has the best Salem Central School spirit.

Show Your Pride, Salem!!!

Do You Know Where You Are Going to College?

By: Kylee Bassett

9/25/06

Representatives from different colleges will be making appearances at different times throughout the year. Even if you are not planning on attending the visiting college, it is good to sit in on these meetings and hear more about the college.

This week, the University of Rhode Island is coming on Tuesday the 26th at 11:00am and SUNY Cobleskill will be here on next Tuesday October 3rd, at 1:00pm.

This is vital to your future so if you do not have any idea where you want to go to college, get started by going to the guidance office, getting a pre-signed pass, and coming to the informational meeting.

Student Drivers at Salem Central

By: Elizabeth Kratzert

9/13/06

Many students would agree that student parking is beneficial. With paying $5, students are able to drive their own cars.

Hanging from every car’s rear-view mirror is a green parking pass. This pass enables the students to park, and Salem Central School officials are able to make sure that no "unwanted" cars are parking in the lots.

If a student fails to get a parking pass, they may be handed a ticket from our very own, Trooper Schmitt.

All student drivers, make sure you get a parking pass!

The Pizza-less Friday

By: Kylee Bassett

9/13/06

For the first time since as long as the students at Salem Central can remember, there was a Friday with no pizza.

Instead of Pizza there were hamburgers and hotdogs, the students were shocked. Pizza was the lunch the following Monday.

The cause of this was that the delivery had not arrived, which left the students and staff of Salem School, pizza-less.

The question all of us have is, will there be any more pizza-less Fridays in the future or was this the one and only?
