The Comebacks

By: Brad Niles

10/23/07

This is a great comedy that is stupendously funny. There isn’t much of a plot to the film, but it is very funny. If you have ever seen: Remember the Titans, Rudy, Any Given Sunday, Necessary Roughness ,or The Longest Yard there are clips from all of those and they are better now than they were in the original films.

The main character Lambeau Fields (played by David Koechner) is a coach who has always been the loser. He coached the Red Sox to defeat in the World Series and caused a horrific car crash in NASCAR, but never had his team win. Then after he’s retired an old friend gets him to comeback and coach a college football team. Once he takes over mayhem ensues, and it creates a memorable movie.

For any person who really enjoys comedies, I recommend The Comebacks.

Review: Mr. Woodcock

 By: Brad Niles

10/05/07

The movie Mr. Woodcock is a must see film. It is a hilarious comedy that will have you laughing throughout the whole film. It also has a sentimental side, but that isn’t what makes this movie good.

In the movie John Farley (Sean William Scott) is a self help writer who travels back to his home town during the middle of his book tour to receive the Corn Cob Key (the highest award you can receive in the town), only to find out his former gym teacher is dating his mom. Throughout the movie you see flash backs from John Farley’s childhood gym classes where he has a bunch of unfortunate mishaps caused by his hated teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thorton).

Farley also meets up with his former childhood friend who tries to help him foil the evil Mr. Woodcocks plan to marry his mother. In the end, the whole plot falls apart, but not for the reasons you may think.

This movie is rated PG-13 and was distributed by New Line Cinema. The combination of Sean William Scott, Billy Bob Thorton, and Susan Sarandon makes this movie what it is. If you enjoy laughing then you should definitely watch this film.

Spider Man 3

By Nick Sobolew

10/05/07

Spider Man 3, this title just instills most people with great excitement and enjoyment of the greatest super hero ever devised.

In the latest movie, our hero Peter Parker comes in contact with an alien symbiotic that threatens to end his career of being a super hero. It changes his suit to black and silver and changes his mood as well.

It seems that since he got his life into perspective, something had to come along and screw it up. Peter’s new attitude brings hardships with all of his loved ones like MJ and Aunt May. That seems almost insignificant in perspective with the dangers of The Sandman and Venom rising to a new power.

This movie gets 14 out of 10 in my opinion and it is rated PG-13 for Serious super villain butt kicking and scary images.

Balls of Fury

 By: Nick Sobolew

9/26/07

Recently I went to the movies and watched "Ball’s of Fury."

The movies basis is on an underground ping-pong table league that is headed by Feng (Christopher Walken) and how, Randy Daytona, (Dan Fogler), a failed ping pong legend is hired by the FBI to infiltrate it and bust Feng who turns out also killed Randy Daytona’s father at the ping pong Olympic games.

On the way he meets a blind ping pong teacher, Wong and his daughter Maggie, who show him that he still has his legendary abilities.

This movie is one of the better movies I have seen this year. This movie is rated PG-13 for Crude, and sex related humor And for foul language.

Over all I give it an 8 out of 10

Blades of Glory

 By: Biz Kratzert

4/4/07

The movie Blades of Glory came out to theatres on March 30, 2007. It stars both Will Ferrell as Chazz Michael Michaels, and Jon Heder as Jimmy MacElroy. Michaels and MacElroy are both male, ice-skating stars, and also rivals. However, when the World Championship ends as a tie between the two, a fight breaks out. With this, they are both banned from male single skating for the rest of their lives. Although they both hate each other, Michaels and MacElroy set their differences aside and form a two-person team. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves comedies. Both Will Ferrell and Jon Heder live up to their previous movies and give a hysterical performance, making it a hit for all comedy lovers. This movie is rated PG-13 and is 1 hour and 33 minutes long.

Wild Hogs

By: Vanessa Burch

3/14/07

Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence and William H. Macy star in an exciting movie filled with action and comedy. The four middle aged men decide to go on a motorcycle trip to get away from their suburban lives.

When they set out for this once in a lifetime experience, they aren’t ready for what lies ahead. They encounter a real life biker gang called the Del Fuegos. The Del Fuegos aren’t happy with the "poser" bikers they have met. This adventure will eventually turn into a fight for their lives.

I found this to be a funny and entertaining movie and would recommend anyone to go and see it.

Dream Girls

By: Kylee Bassett

2/9/07

Dream girls was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, at the golden globes and the Oscars, Achievement in Art Direction, Achievement in Costume Design, Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song), Achievement in Sound Mixing at the Oscars.

They were nominated for Best Motion Picture, Best Performance by an Actress in A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, Best Performance by an Actor in A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, Best Original Song, at the Golden Globes.

For all the hype I really didn’t like the movie that much. I would go out and buy the soundtrack in a minute because the music was amazing, but I don’t think the movie over all was worth the $9.00 to get in. It would have been more of a movie I would have liked to rent when it came out on video rather than seeing it in the movies, but it did make it sound amazing when they were singing.

Night at the Museum

By: Vanessa Burch

01/05/07

Aside from being divorced and hating his son’s new step dad, Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) had just lost his job and his new invention wasn’t going as planned, he was about to get evicted from his apartment. Larry desperately needed a new job. He is accepted as the graveyard-shift security guard at a museum of natural history.

During Larry’s watch, extraordinary things begin to happen. He gets in a fight with an extinct monkey and is almost trampled by a dinosaur named Rexy. Everything in the museum comes alive at night.

The only person Larry can turn to for advice is a wax figure of President Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), who helps Larry save the museum.

I believe this was a great movie for people of any age, anyone who likes comedy and action will like this movie.

Freedom Writers

By: Justin Farrara

1/8/07

Looking for a good movie to see this weekend ? I strongly recommend seeing Freedom Writers.

It’s about a a school in Long Beach, California. This school and town are both split by racial differences among students. They call it a "war" and kill others races. In their opinions they are " protecting their own" One of their teachers change their lives, and influence them in ways thought impossible.

This is one of my favorite movies, seeing as it is the only movie that I’ve ever seen, and agreed with everything that happened. There isn’t a moment where you’re sitting in your seat wanting something else to happen!

So, go see it…you’ll love it !

The Pursuit of Happiness

By: Naomi Losee

01/05/07

In the movie Pursuit of Happiness, Will Smith playing Chris Gardner. He is left in San Francisco, with no money, by his wife, to take care of their five year old son.

Throughout the movie Chris and his son face many hardships after being evicted from their apartment. Chris and his son face the hardships while Chris is trying to land an internship at a stock broker firm. Critics rate this movie a B-, but I rate this movie an A. Definitely a movie I would recommend going to see.

Apocalypto

By: Vanessa Burch

12-22-06

The movie Apocalypto was set in the Mayan civilization. It is about a man whose life is brutally invaded by violent tribe and he is forced to put his pregnant wife and son in a hole to keep them from danger. He has to get back to help his tribe before they are destroyed by these evil people. When he does, he fights many men and eventually loses. He is held on the ground and forced to watch his father be killed. Although he is very upset about his father and relatives, he wants to get back to his wife and son. Before he can get them out safely, he ends up being taken on a journey to a place ruled by fear and evil. The man will have to make a break for it to get back to his home and save his wife and children before it rains and they drown because of flood.

This movie was very interesting but rated R because it has violent and graphic scenes in it.

Déjà vu

By Vanessa Burch

12/1/06

Have you ever experienced a situation when you meet a new person that you feel you’ve known your whole life, or been in a new place that you swear you’ve been before?

This is the feeling of déjà vu. In this movie, these feelings turn out to be warnings from the past and future.

ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) realizes that what most people believe is just "in their heads" is actually something that will lead him to saving hundreds of people from a bomb explosion.

Agent Carlin goes back in time to solve this puzzle and ends up falling in love with a woman (Paula Patton) whose murder is approaching. This woman is who will help him solve a crime before it is too late.

Chiodos

Bone Palace Ballet

By Nick Sobolew

10/01/07

The new Chiodos album is a definite hit for everyone that listens to indie hardcore.

The CD is epic from the moment it starts out the begining riff on "Is It Progression If a Cannibal Uses a Fork?" to the ending poem on "The Undertakers Thirst For Revenge is Unquenchable (The Final Battle)" Vocalist Craig Owens takes his unique high pitched singing and guttural screams to a new level along with some help from guest singers.

The guitar’s in all the tracks are just incredible creating a layer of sound showing how well thought out this album was. The bass gives the wall of sound some glue to hold it together better. The drumming is amazing; on a few of the songs it really helps flesh out the music. The keyboard also is spot on, it weaves a pattern with the guitar and comes out from rhythm to help lead in some songs.

The Chiodos also hired a violinist and a orchestra to help them in a few of the songs like "Teeth the Size of Piano Keys" and the first song "Lexington" The song structure here is quite a bit more chaotic than their previous release All’s Well That Ends Well, but it stays true to their promise of staying as unique as possible.

Over all the sound here is something that rarely comes after the breakout success of a previous album.

"Saosin--Self-Titled"

 By: Nick Sobolew

9/17/07

Ever want to listen to something different?

Something that’s not too heavy, but not to soft?

Saosin’s new self-titled cd would be just for you.

Cove Reber fills in the position of vocalist beautifully now that Anthony Green is gone, by the way check him out in his band Circa Survive.

The guitar work on this CD is amazing giving you a sense of the song, the drums keep the song moving at a pace and at the same time, very unique, and the bass fills in the rest well. Every song is heartfelt and you can clearly tell that the band really tried hard on the lyrics, they all touch on something real in life.

"Voices" describes how it is to fight with the ones you love, "Your Not Alone" details searching for yourself.

Over-all this band has had a huge impression on me since I started listening to them and if you are ever in the mood for something new and exciting check out Saosins new self-titled CD.

The Island of Dr. Moreau: A Book Review

By: Dave DeMarco

10/1/07

I recently read The Island of Dr. Moreau, a science fiction novel by the acclaimed science fiction author H.G. Wells.

He is also the author of such other works as The War of the Worlds and Time Machine.

The book chronicles the life and observations of Edward Prendick, a biology professor in London who, while on a yacht traveling through the south Caribbean, is shipwrecked on a supposedly "deserted" isle. He is taken into the custody of a scientist (Dr. Moreau) and his assistant Montgomery.

While on the Island Prendick notices some other more peculiar inhabitants; creatures that seem not to be altogether human and at the same time not altogether animal. When questioned about the inhabitants Moreau explains that his experiments were frowned upon by London society, so he and Montgomery exiled themselves on this deserted island, where they could be free to experiment any way they wished; free of the ever scrutinizing eye of society.

Wells uses the book in order to criticize all of the foundations civilization holds dear. From religion to government and society in general, he manages to satirize society’s moral values; all in an adventure story littered with suspense, humor, and misery; capable of being read in one exhilarating sitting (if you feel like reading 150 pages all in one sitting).
