By: Brad Niles 10/29/07 On the final day of football for the year- Salem engaged Greenwich in monsoon like conditions. The end result was a 20 to 18 loss for the Generals. The field was soaked and had huge mud puddles in the middle. There was no announcer due to a prior engagement and as the day progressed the conditions got steadily worse. When the wind blew- it chilled you to the bone. In a game that wasn’t cared about by anyone, other than the people from the two schools, it was a great day, at least in the player’s eyes. The highlights of the game were David Jarvis’ 99 yard kick return for a touchdown and Alex Baker’s touchdown catch after the ball was tipped into the air. This game symbolized what the game is really about, it wasn’t played for a championship, it wasn’t played for stats, but it was played for the love of the game.
Salem Rolls Past Bishop Gibbons By: Brad Niles 10/15/07 The Salem Generals had to travel to Bishop Gibbons to finish their regular season for the year. The day turned out great for Salem as they put up 42 points to Bishop Gibbons 12. Dylan Miller started the scoring for the Generals with a 95 yard interception returned for a touchdown. During the second quarter David Jarvis plunged in from 2 yards out for the score. Later in the quarter Kyle McKeighan found Ryan Jameson open in the end zone for the Generals. In the third quarter Kyle McKeighan had a 12 yard pass to Alex Baker for another touchdown. Salem finally allowed a score by Bishop Gibbons which was a 26 yard pass. In the fourth quarter David Jarvis had a 20 yard touchdown run, and for the Generals final score of the game Dylan Miller returned an on-side kick 50 yards. Bishop Gibbons managed to get on the board once more with a 39 yard pass, but that was all they could muster. Final score: Salem 42 Bishop Gibbons 12. Many of the players had nearly flawless performances. Kyle McKeighan went 15 for 17 with 190 yards passing and 2 touchdowns. David Jarvis had 2 touchdowns and 65 yards rushing on 10 carries, Jesse Bain had 8 yards on 4 carries, David Broadhead had 14 yards on 6 carries. The Generals receivers came up big during the game as well, Jesse Bain caught 5 passes for 70 yards, Ryan Jameson caught 5 passes as well for 60 yards and a TD, David Jarvis caught 3 passes for 32 yards, and Alex Baker caught 2 passes for 28 yards and one TD. Also, even though he was an offensive guard during the game, Dylan Miller scored two touchdowns. As the Generals place kicker Pat Wilson went 3 for 4. This game showed what Salem was really made of. Salem has the number 6 spot in the playoffs and they will be forced to play Rensselear this week on Friday night at 7 o’clock at Rensslear. If Salem plays as a team like they did on Saturday they have a very good chance of getting to the second round of the playoffs.
Homecoming for the Generals By: Brad Niles 10/01/07 Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. the Salem Generals will face off against the Rensselear Rams in what will be the Generals final home game of the year. Salem started out slow at the beginning of the year but has improved throughout the year now has a tough test in Rensselear. Salem’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Kyle McKeighan. McKeighan has good targets in Ryan Jameson, Alex Baker, David Jarvis, and Jesse Bain. Rensselear has an average defense but may have trouble stopping the pass due to the amount of skill from Salem’s receiving corps. Also at times when things pick up the it is hard to stop the Generals running the ball as well. Fullback David Broadhead is a tough runner as is Jesse Bain and David Jarvis. On defense the Generals are solid but at points in the season they have had lapses. Rensselear has a tough rushing attack anchored by a tough and rather large fullback and two quick halfbacks. The line of Rensselear is big again and to stop the rushing attack the Generals will need to keep it simple and do the fundamentals. Rensselear is not going to put on an aerial show but they are going to grind it out for most of the game. If Salem can score early and set the tempo for the game it will put a lot of pressure on Rensselear due to their lack of passing ability. Also Salem needs to play physical to keep Rensselear at bay. With the Generals at home for the final game of the year they should come out fired up and in the end it should be a quite interesting game. Salem vs. Fort Edward Fort Edward Escapes With a Win By: Brad Niles 4/24/07 September 22nd started out okay for the Generals, but got out of hand for the first two quarters of their Class D football contest against Fort Edward. To start the game Salem drove down the field until a broken up screen pass on fourth down in Fort Edward territory left them on defense. After that Fort Edward had a few big plays that left them with 8 points after an 8 yard run from halfback Tony Breeyear. In the second quarter Fort Edward added two touchdowns to their lead, but missed both 2-point conversions. Despite the mounting odds, Salem kept fighting. After halftime Salem came out with a thirteen play drive that ate up eight minutes and was finished by a two yard touchdown run by David Broadhead. In the fourth quarter Fort Edward got a quick score as well as the two point conversion. Salem fought back once again and scored on an 18 yard pass from David Jarvis to Jesse Bain. Once the game was over the Salem rushing attack gained 84 yards. David Broadhead had 52 yards on 9 carries, David Jarvis had 27 yards on 8 carries, and Jesse Bain had 5 carries for 11 yards. Kyle McKeighan threw for 143 yards with 10 completions out of 19 tries. David Jarvis went 1 for 4 with an 18 yard TD pass. With 4 receptions Jesse Bain got 48 yards and one TD, Alex Baker caught 2 balls for 32 yards, Ryan Jameson caught 3 passes for 53 yards, and David Jarvis caught 2 passes for 22 yards. Even though Salem lost, the second half showed what Salem can really do. This week the Generals travel to Whitehall on Saturday September 29th to face the Railroaders and they hope to play like they did in the second half of the Fort Edward game.
Salem vs. Warrensburg By: Brad Niles 4/17/07 On Saturday September 15th the Salem Generals football team faced off against the Warrensburg Burgers. Heading into the game the Generals were 0-1 in the league and 0-2 over all. As was stated in the locker room before the game a victory was needed. Warrensburg was 1-1 heading into the game.
